Roger Askew (Page 2)
The songs on Scarab Moon are bought to life by some finely crafted musical performances, a skill which Roger honed throughout the eighties playing keyboards and occasionally guitar with a host of bands and singers. Kiki Dee, Kit Hain, Hambi, and Danny Kustow all benefited from Roger's musical contributions during a period when he was spending as much time engineering and producing as he was playing. He spent four years playing in the band Bliss who enjoyed top five album success in Italy and Brazil and chart single success in Germany, accompanied by a plethora of television and touring.
In the early nineties Bliss dissolved, but the empathy between Roger, guitarist Paul Sirett and drummer Chris Baker continued to flourish. Roger began to write songs again and over the next couple of years, by begging and borrowing studio time, they recorded the ten songs that would become Scarab Moon. By the time the album was finished, Paul had become a successful playwright while Chris was working with a number of bands and the impetus to take the album further was lost - more so as Roger was finding himself in demand as both a performer and producer. He played Hammond and piano on Christy Moore's highly praised Smoke and Strong Whiskey album and went on to perform on and co-produce Christy's multiple platinum album King Puck . More work in Ireland followed with Eleanor Shanley and Brian Kennedy, whilst more recently he has produced two albums for blues band Spikedrivers with whom he enjoys the occasional live gig.
At a chance meeting recently in a London studio, Siren Music heard some tracks from Scarab Moon and were enthusiastic to hear more. They liked what they heard and offered to take Scarab Moon "off the back burner." Roger's charismatic voice carries his stories within a strong melodic structure - listen, and it won't be long before you're immersed in the songs and performing talents of Roger Askew.
