These south London friends must have stood out like a sore thumb, emanating from their Peckham homes came the sounds of Nashville, Memphis and Greenville, Carolina. As their peers were buying the latest Technic decks and Pioneer headphones they were learning guitar licks and Elvis Presley lyrics.
It started early when Colbert Hamilton and Paul Cunningham met at local music sessions. Colbert would be honing his distinctive deep southern soul vocals and Paul, his guitar skills. They lost touch after leaving school and Paul went on to become an in demand guitarists and producer. Working with the likes of, Massive Attack, Neneh Cherry, Gary Moore and Playing on Massive Attacks epoch making "Safe from harm'' single. Colbert meanwhile got off to a good start when still in his teens he was asked to sing on one of the last sessions Phil Linnot ever recorded. He went on to tour the world with his much loved, Rockabilly band Colbert Hamilton and the Hell Razors, which became inexplicably big in Japan for some reason.
It wasn't until Colbert and Paul met again at an industry gathering in the mid 90's that Holy Man Jones was born, Paul Kelly was quickly recruited on Bass and Maxwell Heath on drums, both seasoned musicians they were and still are a tight musical outfit. Initially they were a typical four piece band playing a mix of Rock and Soul. Then when Maxwell left they decided to continue as a three piece hitching a ride on London's burgeoning acoustic scene. When prospective new drummer T Daniel Howard saw the band live, he insisted he would only join if they would continue playing seated and allow him to add only snare and brushes, so as not to ruin what was a wonderful live act The bands live shows are often described as sizzling with great playing and highly emotive vocals. It is classic R&B great quick punchy songs one after the other with little chat or formality.
These live shows quickly brought them to the attention of small independent label Nesta Records and a deal was signed late in 2002. A year later the band have completed their debut album ''Let It Rain'', much like their live performances the album consists of 11 punchy rootsy and soulful tracks. There are nine originals and two cover versions Elvis's '' Trying to get to You'' and The Faces ''You can make me dance sing or anything''. Judging by the amount of radio play the tracks "Easy on yourself'' and ''You can make me dance sing or anything'', are getting they seem certain to be future singles.
Paul say's; ''We decided to cover The Faces because we are big fans of theirs and The Small Faces, we love the way the' d mix rock, soul, folk, blues and country to produce their own sound, hopefully we've achieved a similar thing. Also they were great live, 'a good time band' and we've been described in that way too. As for ''Trying to get to you'' Colbert is just a huge Elvis fan and we always play it live'' Other stand out tracks on the album are ''Let it Rain'', ''I know'' "Brother'' and the folky what put a ''Smile upon your face''. You can see the band perform live from now until the end of the year.
