Thirteen Steps to Recovery

Dave Carter has put together one of the most existing acoustic based musical projects of recent times. "Thirteen Steps to Recovery" examines the process of healing that addicts go through, in learning to live with their condition. An ambitious musical task that has stretched the artists talents to the limit. Dave talks openly about the album and the inspiration behind it.

1) "Thirteen Steps to Recovery" is an intriguing title for the project, what is the thinking behind it ?

"Thirteen Steps to Recovery" is based on any twelve step recovery program you may embark on if you have addiction problems, alcohol, sex, drugs, and in this case love. The Thirteenth step is commonly understood to indicate the love you find after recovery.

2) The 12 Step Recovery is often associated with alcohol and drug dependency is this something you have had experience
of ?

Yes I have had and will always have addiction issues, I believe our society is riddled with addiction, and as a society we really need to acknowledge this which is what I am doing through my art

3) The album is very honest as if you are sharing your experiences with the audience, how do you think it will be perceived ?

I have no idea at this time how it is perceived, I only know that every lyric actually happened in my life, and every song was written from the bottom of my heart.

4) Musically the album manages to combine modern recording techniques and acoustic arrangements, was it important to get a contemporary sound ?

The sound of the album was very clear, I wanted all the tracks to be based around the acoustic guitar and my voice, so it would enable me to go out live by myself and play all the songs from start to end on a six string, so i was not trying to be contemporary, I was just attempting to fulfill what I had set from the outset

5) As an accomplished acoustic guitarists was it important not to lose the intimacy the instrument lends it's self ?

The guitar is very important, and intimate element of the guitar is amazing and I love it, my songs live are very quiet, and I love a dark room with candles, what ever that means.

6) It draws comparison with bands such Star Sailor and Turin Brakes what are your influences ?

I grew up with Dylan and Lenon, I love Tom Waites and I have recently discovered Nick Drake (awesome) and I guess I fit into the James Blunt category

7) You financed and produced the project yourself is the aim to now get Major label interest or would you prefer to remain independent ?

I have major plans for the project, including animating the illustrations online, so I can have a DVD that tells the story of "Thirteen Steps to Recovery" which I can sell to Hollywood for a major film... I will need the correct backing, major or in dependant I need financial and business backing to achieve my goals.

8) It truly is a wonderful album what do you intend to do now - more live work etc ?

I am selling the album into the industry and putting the live show together. The idea is that I replicate the album. However whilst I am doing that I am working on the second album " The Recovery Album" which is a remix album of some of the tracks from "Thirteen Steps to Recovery". And whilst Thirteen Steps to Recovery is designed for the listener to play whilst reading a book or driving a car in a quiet moment, The Recovery Album is de singed to mirror this emotion, and to be played just before you go out or at
7am in the morning after you get back from a party in Ibiza. Along side The Recovery Album I am wring the 3rd album called "The Beginning, which is beautiful".
